iiiiinteresting.... I seem to recall that the folks at SWITCH -- the 
Swiss HE network -- had a similar problem with alpha-2.5. They also 
tracked it to php......

Now, we all know that the target side codebase for beta-1 is 
significantly different from alpha-2.5 (to say the least   (-:  ). 
But, its curious that php shows up again......
