As a side note on this, there is a further issue with externally
provisioned groups and the current grouper release: these groups show up
in grouper's search, but at least with my current 'flat' group structure
appear in the search results with no name, and if clicked on throw an
unhelpful exception.
This seems odd. Do you mean that search results for groups managed in grouper give a problem rather than groups made available through a custom source adapter?

In media.properties:
search.group.result-field=displayName

specifies the attribute displayed for search results and displayName is always available.
