Sorry, but we must be talking past each other here. I thought we were discussing automated black-box testing of the software. Of course you must have a valid configuration. What "arbitrary" AA are you talking about?

Unless I'm missing something, this assumes a particular NameMapping
element in the config file and more importantly a valid principal name
at request time. I still don't see how to make a query to an
arbitrary Shib AA without first contacting the SSO service to obtain a
NameIdentifier. Even then the client must interact with the SSO
service, so I just don't see how to automate this.
