That makes sense.  So, if JDK 1.3 compliance is something we want, then
we could use something like the Jakarta Regexp library.

I think what needs to be said (and maybe it has), for sure, is what JDK
and J2EE version are supported.  If it's stated and documented then we
all know the target we're shooting for and we can make good decisions
about what JDK/J2EE features to rely on vs using an external library.
