I think what needs to be said (and maybe it has), for sure, is what JDK
and J2EE version are supported. If it's stated and documented then we
all know the target we're shooting for and we can make good decisions
about what JDK/J2EE features to rely on vs using an external library.

I don't think this is documented anywhere (except in build files). If
it is, I missed it.

I've been 100% consistent since 2002 that JDK 1.4 is the baseline. Recently enough people have complained and the move to JAXP 1.3 makes the DOM3 support available on JDK 1.3. So I'm considering dropping the OpenSAML requirement to JDK 1.3, that's what led to this discussion.

The Java SP isn't done, but 1.4 has been the target.

As far as containers go, I always felt that most people interested in Shib are the same people likely to want to use Tomcat and the opposite is also likely. If you're using WebSphere, the chance you'd be willing to use anything but IBM's 5 figure bloatware seems questionable to me. Maybe not in specific cases, but in the general "market" sense I think that's a reasonable assumption.

That said, again, it's up to the community. I'm more a user of the IdP than anything else, as long as it always supports Tomcat, I'm happy.
