I'm sure it will work much better than checking it into a SVN repository.

SVN is for revision control of small text files, not big binaries. The
wiki download page is used to point the user to a normal directory (e.g.
http://www.perfsonar.net/download/bundles/) which is served by a web
server directly, so file size is not a problem there. You can upload
everything which the web server OS can handle.

Regarding disk space: Do you think SVN doesn't use disk files? ;-)

You might think of checking in individual files from within the image,
e.g. config files. Everything that has to be changed to turn a standard
VMware installation into a working image. But definitely not a 500 MB image.
