I'm not convinced that a message-parameter is really enough here for the 'general' solution. I suspect we may want this information published to the LS somehow as well. But, I guess something like this would at least be a start.

From client point of view, a client needs to "know" the protocol/schema version, _before_ sending a message, in order to generate the correct message.
If the protocol info is inside the message, there is no much options how the client will "bootstrap".
Therefore, my preferences are for having version info in LS.

I agree. If LS is not present the option is getting general info (including version number) from the service directly (LookupInfoRequest/Response). Of course service URL must be known.
