Hi Scott;

Great, thanks for the clarification.

I can't think of a single case where 'root' would be required.  I typically just 'sudo command' when looking at logs or managing the start/stop of the tools.  It should also be noted that OWAMP, BWCTL, and NPAD all run with non-root privileges.  The NDT tools does pkt-pair timings by placing the interface in promiscuous mode so it does run as root.  However, managing this tool from inside the sudo framework works correctly.

Does that help answer your question?

Regards;
Rich

This is not the Live-CD, this is with our own built version of perfsonar/NDT.  We cannot run the LiveCD due to security policies.  And we have to run a distribution where it has supported patching, such as RHEL, Ubuntu, etc.  So we are running RHEL 5 desktop.

Hi Scott;

Can you give us a little more background on this?  Are you having a
specific problem?

If you used the bootable CD NPToolkit ISO image, then you do have both
root access and sudo access on that system.  I don't believe that
there are any restrictions or issues with using sudo on a system
booted with this ISO image.
