Just FYI, the current group naming plan for UW is:

(copied from its canonical location in a protected wiki, unfortunately, where it has links to other relevant docs etc).

This is not yet implemented in Grouper, so no info on how well it works there, functionally or performance-wise. But regarding courses our plan would be generally flat, though now that I think about it having quarters be stems probably makes sense.
