233.56.12.2:5501 is a transport stream with three different elementary
streams, each one identified by a program id (PID).
233.56.12.6:4446 is a single program transport stream and requires < 1/3
as much bandwidth. It also has a program guide (SAP.

I believe that it is the three together, but I'm not a video expert. . .

That I can help with, assuming you're on a Mac. In general, Mac apps
don't like to run multiple instances, I believe because of issues with
preferences files and the like. But there are ways around that:
- Install two different versions, for example the release and a trunk
or branch nightly build (I usually have one of those around for testing
anyway).
- Make two copies of the same version, with different names.
- Invoke the program from Finder by clicking on the icon, and then
start Terminal and invoke it from the command line. That will likely be
something like "/Applications/vlc/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC".
I just did the last one, and found that indeed it complains about one of
the prefs files, but both copies run and they can display the two
different program streams.
Bill.
