Another option, and I'm not suggesting it for here, is Google's new Apache module, mod_pagespeed[1]. It has lots of nice features to serve up stuff more efficiently.

Heh. Sorry, good catch. That makes my Jasig ResourceServer reference
less directly relevant.

I hope it can nonetheless be decent inspiration for navigating the
problem space. Insights like the need to be able to easily turn off the
minification in development seem obvious but were hard-won.

I'm not sure why, it still has to all be hosted by the same site, doesn't
it? The browser can't load the same scripts from the cache when they're
served by different sites, can it?

Regardless, I wanted to note that these Java-based packaging suggestions
are irrelevant when the SP is not in Java. (Rephrasing, no, I'm not
adding
Maven to my build.)
