Proceeding along my line of dumb-ass questions, I'm wondering if the origin tarball will continue to include all the stuff it currently includes, or if it can (or should, or will) just include necessary doc files, and /bin, and dist/shibboleth.war. Seems like if all the source stuff isn't necessary for a binary distro it may as well be left out rather than potentially confusing the poor binary-installing sysadmin? Or am I misunderstanding what's needed?
I'm speaking for Walter out of turn, but I would guess he included the source
either because we've been pre 1.0 all along or because
edit/ant/copy war really is the way it works (or is designed to work).
One reason is that I think the method Scott described (where you actually edit the source config files and deploy the war) is a pretty nice way of setting things up and I wanted knowledgeable people to be able to do this if they chose. Bob speculated in an earlier email that this might not be the best setup for sysadmin types. I tend to agree, or at least I am unsure. In my uncertainty, I decided to support both sorts of setups.
Another reason is that I have, up until this release, thought that the origin wasn't very usable without reworking the default "attribute back-end" code. I certainly had to make local mods to hook previous versions up to the directory here. I still think many people will need to implement the Attribute Definition PlugIns until we have more built-in functionality.
Anyway, I don't have a problem with changing the way we do this, we could just take out the source or make a separate src tar. Either way, though, I would like to examine the various install/upgrade processes and see which is the easiest for most people to understand.
The flaw in that is the ARPs, since one would expect those to be externally
accessible and editable.
The configuration method you described still works with file:// URLs.
