Hi Nicolas,

I agree Giovanni and Jochen points.
However, the point of providing VMWare image
does not prevent the project to have a livecd (or better a special custom box)

It is there to quickly disseminate the project services showing up its various services' capabilities.
In addition, all NRENs administrators are not always familiar with JAVA/WEB SERVICES etc.

I also agree the best solution is to have a specific package for perfsonar that can be installed flawlessly by the native package management. (a .deb, .rpm, pkg ...) In our NREN, we just choose to use VMWare because of its simplicity.
Basically, we already had the infrastructure and our VMWare server also hosts EDUROAM service.

The proposition does not exclude the other way to spread the project.
It just provide an other convenient alternative to deploy PerfSONAR service for
NRENs who want to test and get familiar to the PerfSONAR services quickly.

The point is to make PerfSONAR installation easy taking into account the skills level of each person.

Hi Nicolas,
about VMWare:
it is a tool that allow you to install on a single machine many virtual machines.
The benefit of using it, in our case, is that you can install the ios with all the sw creating an image of the virtual machine.
Then you can run the image on any other machine using VMWare without installing anything.
Example of use:
it is often used to run windows at the same time you run linux on a linux machine (note that the resources of the physical machine are distributed on the virtual machines)
or if you have a service on VMW you can easily backup it, just coping the image file (of the ios with all the sw installed) to another server.

What are the drawbacks of such methods?
Could it be a way of providing easy to install perfsonar web-services or it will decrease their performances?
The use of VMW has no particular drawbacks other than what Jochen said,
but I don't think it is a good solution:
all the sw is usually installed on a linux box by the package manager of the system (for debian apt-get, for red hat yum and so on) from a pakage (.deb, .rpm, ..) with just a command. It will be nice to have such a linux package of each perfsonar service.
Moreover, in this case, the upgrade of the sw to a new release will be very easy.

Giovanni

Hi,

several users have asked to have something really simple for installing perfsonar web-services.
As way of facilitating means, I have heard of HELL (DFN plan) and VMWare.

Could someone explain me:
a) what is HELL
b) what is its difference with VMWare
c) are there other system that could allow someone to deploy quickly and easily some tools.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Best regards,
