Hi Nicolas,
regarding HELL:
We had the (simple) idea to build a Linux live system based on e.g. Knoppix
containing at least our measurement tools and perfSONAR services. That means
that you get a CD or DVD you put into your Computer and it comes up with all
measurement tools (e.g. BWCTL, OWAMP, Hades) installed and useable and all
perfSONAR services running. Doing this for the complete perfSONAR framework
is really a good idea!
A "perfSONAR live system" should be modular and distinguish between MP and
MA.
A MP can easily be set up on some machine out there and provide at least
simple services. Further features mainly depend on the hardware (e.g. special
interface cards and GPS synchronisation). A MA on the other hand has a
completely different scope. You normally need only a view machines running
MAs, but the MA needs (lot of) permanent diskspace for the data.
Some notes regarding VMWare: The main problem using VMWare are the hardware
requirements of especially the MP services. GPS, special NICs and so on have
to be accessable reliable enough and the emulation most likely has a
performace impact on e.g. one-way delay measurements.
Another simple way of quickly deploying services would be some sort of
embedded system. A small and cheap box fully configured (software and
hardware). That would most likely be the most "powerful" solution since you
can guaranty that the hardware (NIC, GPS, RTC and so on) perfectly fits the
needs of the perfSONAR services. But it might not be easy to find this sort
of "perfect" hardware for perfSONAR services in the embedded world...
greetings,
Jochen
