So OpenSAML 2.0 will support all versions of SAML? What does this
mean for current users of OpenSAML? Do OpenSAML 1.1 and 2.0 run side
by side, or does one preclude the other?

Yes, OpenSAML 2.0 will support all versions of SAML. The current OpenSAML implementation will remain in it's current CVS branch and will be bug fixed, and maybe have new features added, for some period of time. In theory, OpenSAML 1.1 and 2.0, at this time, could run side by side.

Lastly, there will be API changes to the current classes. We'll be
doing this to bring the SAML 1.X support in to line with the new design.

So the SAML 1.1 support in OpenSAML 2.0 can not be used as a drop-in
replacement for OpenSAML 1.1?

Nope, they will not be drop in replacements. We decided not to preserve backward compatibility with this new version.

If you have questions or comments related to the information in this
email, or about whether the new library will support some given feature
of SAML X.Y, feel free to let them fly now.

Will OpenSAML 2.0 support the SAML 1.x metadata specification? If so,
is this support tightly integrated with OpenSAML 2.0 or can the
metadata bits be used in conjunction with OpenSAML 1.1?

I don't know if OpenSAML 2.0 will support SAML 1.X metadata, I hadn't brought that up with Scott. It would NOT be tightly coupled with the SAML 2 metadata code if it was included. In theory, you'll be able to remove all the SAML 1.X or 2.0 code from the library and it would work just fine. As I mentioned above, at this time, OpenSAML 2.0 could be used alongside of OpenSAML 1.1 so you could use OpenSAML 2.0 metadata and use the OpenSAML 1.1 SAML core and protocol classes.
