Hi Tom -
I'm just now looking into Signet also (and I'm sure Dan will, too)... I think it certainly would be worthwhile to see if we could all have an initial discussion to see where we all are and what we hope to accomplish. I think Dan Ellentuck and I would be important participants from the uPortal side of things - Dan, do you think Andrew Petro or Eric Dalquist should participate, too?
Once we get a list of who should be involved, we can start to work out logistics.
Thanks!
Matt

Matt,
I'm very glad that we're connecting and I also look forward to working with you guys to see what grouper might offer for you, and vice versa to learn where grouper may need to grow.
Looking over the GAP wiki, it may be that both grouper and signet, the privilege management system being developed by I2, should be examined to see where and how they each might integrate with the Spinning off GAP project. Signet's at <http:// middleware.internet2.edu/signet>, and Lynn McRae (being CCd) is the project lead.
Should we try to find some synchronous communication time to quickly and collectively get up to speed on these technologies and projects (ie, conf call or f2f somewhere)? I'll also post some comments to the GAP/Grouper wiki in the next couple of days.

Hi Mark (and everyone else)...
Dan Ellentuck of Columbia and I are trying to get up to speed on Grouper in order to see where the work Dan's doing for uPortal and Grouper intersect to see how we can make sure that uPortal conforms to some meaningful standards. JA-SIG had a conference early last week, and in a Developer meeting one of the topics was groups and permissions. One of the tasks currently underway is to separate out the uPortal Groups and Permissions modules into a standalone application.
So, any input that anyone might have on how Grouper could be used to this end would be very welcome. I'm sure we'll have some discussion topics to bring up and Dan and I learn more about the good work you all have done so far...
We're looking forward to it! Anything you might want to add to our Wiki page would be great, too.
Thanks,
Matt Young

I noticed this morning that the Grouper project is mentioned on the JASIG wiki (home of uPortal and CAS authentication). Anybody with a serious interest in uPortal is likely to browse this wiki fairly regularly.
If anybody would care to make any improvements to the wiki page then I believe anybody can register to use the wiki and do so.
