Xiaotaow,

Yesterday the audio quality was fine. Unfortunately I'm at home today and
can't do much testing from here. I've actually been trying to connect but
so far haven't had much luck getting through all the at home NAT and
firewall issues.

Good news is that I can connect fine to the SIP server through the firewall
that we have at WHOI. It is a Netscreen running version 5 of their software
which is SIP aware.

I'll be trying some additional testing from at home just for fun and will
let you know if I learn anything interesting. From somewhat limited testing
against our local SIP server, I think at least part of the problem is that
the SER server is by default configured to reject connections from private
addresses (probably a good thing.) If one is trying to connect through a
small switch like a Netgear or Linksys over a cable modem or DSL, it is the
private address that is presented to the SER server. This is true even if
the connection is wrapped in a VPN connection. In that case, it appears
that both the IP address assigned through the VPN and the private address is
available to the SER server, but it looks at the private address. This
appears to be something that can be easily scripted around.

I'm aware that none of this is important for the SMM, but thought I pass it
on to the group while I had chance since there was some talk about
firewalls, NATs, etc. earlier.
