Hi,
It appears that there are 3 rooms in the East-West Center that are wired for
sound. (See Alan's very helpful note attached below.) These use audio
signaling which is standard but different than what a PC sound card expects.
We can get amplifier/converter units for about $100-150 a piece that would
produce the signal needed for the sound cards. This is a device like the
one seen at http://www.beachtek.com/dxa6.html From the sound card we can
just use a sip client on a PC to make the into call that people can listen
in on. I'm not sure of all the details of how things were configured in
Indiana to let lots of people listen in on a conference room and let them
comment among themselves but none of that would need to change.
I suggest that we try picking up the audio in just the three rooms that are
wired. This obviously isn't complete coverage of the conference, but will
serve to demonstrate the concept and usefulness (or lack thereof). To do
this we would need to get 3 converters, unless someone has a couple
available, and 3 computers. It would probably be possible to use just one
computer, but I don't think that wiring and setup hassles are worth trying
to do this. If the interest in doing this, I can prepare and ship 3 PCs
from Woods Hole (although if there were some old machines we could borrow
already in Hawaii that would be better.) Can Internet2 buy 3 of the
converters or can we scrounge them up from our campus A/V people?
