Our media folks had a contract to stream certain events live using a vendor that utilized the Akamai servers on campus. Basically, the vendor would charge us for the number of viewers based on numbers provided by Akamai for on and off campus viewing.

This implies that on campus servers can provide live streaming content as well as static content.

maybe our on-campus
stack is only doing static pages and not stream caching.

That's almost certainly the case. We have static content Akamai servers on
our network, and what we were told (and had repeated a number of times as
we've dealt with them on a few issues) is that Akamai has, in general, 3
types of servers that they deploy:

1.) Static content
2.) Pre-recorded streaming content
3.) Live streaming content

In almost all cases, the boxes that they'll put on campuses are of type 1.
Type 2/3 servers are almost all in their own data centers or co-located
with the larger ISPs.

Obviously I have no idea how correct this may be now. Or heck, if it ever
was correct. :)
