They used to be reachable. I should only list servers that
are reachable, I don't know why they all appear to be broken
right now. Note that in some cases there are no unicast replies,
which probably means someone has accidentally added a packet
filter/firewall somewhere...

In theory there is native IPv6 multicast in many academic
networks now. E.g. between Norway and I2. I will investigate
why these ssmping servers are in such a sorry state and reduce
the list to some that works. I would be happy for any additional
servers I can list.

There are. It seems to be in gutsy/edgy etc at least. Googling for
debian and ssmping shows that it's in many debian repositories etc. It
should also be easy to compile on most systems.
