Oh, that reminds me -
Right now I am researching the purchase of 1024x768 (p) cameras (of which there are a number). We will
need at least dozens. If anyone has any experience, suggestions or recommendations, I would be glad to hear of it.

forget 1080p cameras for now unless you have a ton of money
like it or not, we still live in an interlaced world (at the source end any)
hollywood can afford better.
we use 1080i as it affords higher raw bitrates etc, and stress- testing apps and networks is the other half of what we do

Marshall,
I'm using a Sony HVRZ1U camera - it doesn't do 1080p. It does 1080i or SD.

It seems odd to me to be having this discussion without any--
discussion or even mention of bit rates.
I can do 1280 p at 29.97 fps and my little laptop can decode it no sweat... if I
encode at 100 kpbs.
Also, coming from the computer / network side of things, I have to say that I never
intend to source any interlaced video, at least on my own dime. Why use a 70 year old analog
compression technology if you don't have to ?

Actually, in my experience, the only 1080i streams I'm able toI'm keen to see if there are any clients who can displaySame feel with Real and Windows Media (AKA VC-1). It is no realistic to
1080i in H.264. My current experience with H.264 + QuickTime
is I don't have a machine powerful enough to do that.
Although I can do 720p without any problem with the same codec.
expect see H.264 like codec 1080[ip] stream on PC.
render on commodity high-performance PCs are MPEG2
(and uncompressed ;o) ).
My question was, whether somebody has been more successful
with any of MPEG-4 and/or AVC (aka H.264) on PC... Or is it
better say on quad-core G5-based PowerMac?
Thanks,
