In a multi-fed world, you've presupposed the WAYF equivalent of X.500.

DNS is a global distributed directory that didn't fail. And it may be that
working with some combination of DNS records and new-fangled XRIs or
something may be the solution here.

But I doubt tying to build *another* global distributed directory is
realistic any time soon.

That's why we're being cautious about all this.
