What I have, looking at dates on my copies of distribution tarballs, is:

  "2.5 alpha"    Sep 2002
  0.7            Dec 2002
  0.8            Mar 2003
  1.0            Jun 2003
  1.1            Oct 2003
  1.2            May 2004

All versions since at least 1.0 have, I think, been based on SAML 1.1, 
which was stable in May 2003 (but only got full OASIS approval in Aug
2003).  Ironically enough SAML 1.0 support is being added to satisfy the 
US Federal E-Authentication program requirements.
