Right, OK, giving it a try on RH8 ...

/opt/shibboleth/bin/shar -f starts up but apparently doesn't keep running,
since now there is no shar process, and the POST from the HS just hangs
...  The last few lines of shar.log output are below but don't seem to
show anything.  Any other places to look for log output?

Trying to do shar -f again results in:

Trying to load logger configuration:
/opt/shibboleth/etc/shibboleth/shar.logger
bind: Address already in use

and it exits.

Ideas?
