This does imply that the shar died.  So, let's run it under gdb.

first, remove the existing shar socket:
        rm -f /tmp/shar-socket

second, run the shar under gdb:
        gdb /opt/shibboleth/bin/shar
        gdb> run

Then we can see what we can see.
