I'd defer to Barbara on that, but from the source, it looks like
REMOTE_USER isn't set, which is probably a tomcat problem. The tomcat
error looks like it's trying to do something security-ish inside tomcat,
which is probably the trouble.

Did you add the tomcatAuthentication="false" attribute inside server.xml
in the connector element? I presume the deploy guide mentions that in
both target and origin, but I'll take a look.
