I have an issue with shutdown –r (reboot and init 6) not rebooting perfSonar v3.5.1.7. The system goes through the shutdown process then the last thing on the screen is Restarting system. … The hardware is a Dell Optiplex 790. Any ideas on what to look at to solve this issue?

 

This isn’t an issue with perfSONAR; some Dell desktops have a penchant for not rebooting when the kernel tries it the default way.

 

Next time you boot, tell the kernel to try an alternate means of getting the system to restart by providing the “reboot” argument.  The values that tend to resolve this are “acpi” and “cold,” but if those don’t work, the entire list can be found at https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt (search it for “reboot=”).  Once you find one that works, add it to the GRUB configuration and you should be good to go.
