Hi guys,

So far we have been using the port number 8080 for default
service/tomcat installation. Apart from rpms, in the release 3.1 we want
to have deb packages of our services running with Tomcat which is
already present as deb package in Ubuntu. The problem is that default
port value for it is 8180 (in RedHat it is still 8080). The question is
which port do we want to support as default one for our services? I
guess there are much more people using Ubuntu than RedHat (or other
rpm-based distros) so 8180 might be more convenient but I understand
that we may want to keep 8080 as well-known solution.

I think the best option is to add a note in the installation manual
about this since changing the default configuration for one of both
(deb/rpm) requires on of the following options:

* A custom tomcat package.
and we really don't want that any more

* A installation manual that says that you should change the port.
I don't know if this is a good option, since people maybe want to
decide anyway on what port they want to run tomcat.

* A post installation script in a package.
But I don't think perfSONAR has the knowledge/manpower to do this?

A custom installation package isn't a bad idea, since more options
should be changed during installation. For example, the tomcat security
manager should be disabled at installation in the case of ubuntu/debian.
This package could have the name ps-mdm-common or something, and other
packages should depend on it. Any post installation options could be
added to this package also, for example configuring the right Java
environment for the distribution (update-alternatives). This would
simplify the installation process even more.

I like this idea. But you're right to do it after 3.1.

But I don't know if this is a good idea to introduce before the 3.1
release since it requires some work, thinking and testing, and I don't
have the time to do it, sorry :). So for now I think the note in the
installation manual is the best (say: 8080 for RPM, 8180 for deb, if you
want to change go there and there).
