In general I think that RHEL would be more prevalent in NOCs and other professional settings than the flavors of Debian such as Ubuntu.
I think we also need to be careful not to paint ourself into a 'this is the standard port' corner for this exact reason. There is nothing stopping us from picking a single port and letting that persist between operating systems. It may be historic that the webcache/webservice port has been 8080 (and tools like nmap know this) but it shouldn't matter to pS as a whole if we start to us something different (the LS allows us to know what other people are using).

Hi,
according to this survey (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Ubuntu-and-Red-Hat-are-Top-Open-Source-Vendors-78441.shtml), Red Hat has a share of 35%, Ubuntu has 23%. So I would dare to say, that more people are using Red Hat than Ubuntu. This may change in the future, but I would not speculate that RPM-based is less used than debian-based or vice versa. Both is common and will probaly stay common for quite a while.
Just my 2 cents,

Hi guys,
So far we have been using the port number 8080 for default
service/tomcat installation. Apart from rpms, in the release 3.1 we want
to have deb packages of our services running with Tomcat which is
already present as deb package in Ubuntu. The problem is that default
port value for it is 8180 (in RedHat it is still 8080). The question is
which port do we want to support as default one for our services? I
guess there are much more people using Ubuntu than RedHat (or other
rpm-based distros) so 8180 might be more convenient but I understand
that we may want to keep 8080 as well-known solution.
What's your opinion? Which port do you prefer for 3.1?
