Hi Nicolas,
about VMWare:
it is a tool that allow you to install on a single machine many virtual 
machines.
The benefit of using it, in our case, is that you can install the ios 
with all the sw creating an image of the  virtual machine.
Then you can run the image on any other machine using VMWare without 
installing anything.
Example of use:
it is often used to run windows at the same time you run linux on a 
linux machine (note that the resources of the physical machine are 
distributed on the virtual machines)
or if you have a service on VMW you can easily backup it, just coping 
the image file (of the ios with all the sw installed) to another server.
