It's possible but it's unclear if there's overhead introduced by the browser scheduling websockets differently to raw sockets.

A Chrome packaged app might have better luck with the extensions socket api, or using Native Client.

Long term, it would be nice to get rid of the Applet-dependence. Doing so would require implementing the NDT protocol in _javascript_, which may be non-trivial since it's not an HTTP-based protocol. I think the HTML 5 frontend uses the Applet under-the-hood.

Second question - is the HTML-5 frontend in a working state? From what I tested, it would seem it's not fully operational. After choosing to begin tests, I would get to a test screen, but nothing would happen afterwards. I also had to restart the browser to get to that point again(applet issue?). I tested both on Chrome and Firefox.

Third question - looking at the code it seems that _javascript_ actually uses the applet underneath for running tests. Are there plans to move the core testing functionality to _javascript_, so that it can run on its own without a java applet?
