Thanks, Chris. But I don't think I asked my main question very clearly.

If ant dist wipes out the dist directory and rebuilds it, and if patches are 
applied directly to the dist directory, are you saying that I have to 
re-patch every time I rebuild? Is it not possible to patch the build 
directory instead or something more permanent?

maybe delete dist dir before building if you like to be sure.  shouldnt be 
necessary, but might as well.
