Hi,

We've recently completed a Grouper "proof of concept" here at Stirling and
now have the go ahead to set up a pilot production service :-).

I did the initial "proof of concept" installation using the quick installer
(v2.2.0) and the bundled Tomcat 6 (on a Debian VM). I'm not a sys admin (I
know just enough to be dangerous!) but the quick installer did all the heavy
lifting for me and enabled me to get up and running quickly without any
central support . . . .

As we are now setting up a Production system (for which we intend to use the
latest version), I'm working with our Institutional Sys Admins who want
(quite rightly) to set up the PROD system using their preferred
systems/approaches, which includes using either Tomcat 7 or Tomcat 8 (and
they mention that Tomcat 6 only has another year until EOL) . . .

I know the Grouper docs explicitly mention using Tomcat 6, and Tomcat 6 came
bundled with the v2.2.0 installer I used, and a brief search of the mail list
archives brought up some older posts where Tomcat 7 compatibility was asked
about, but the replies suggested that there were issues with Tomcat 7 at that
time (although https://bugs.internet2.edu/jira/browse/GRP-838 appears to
suggest a workaround?) - I think I also recall seeing something along the
lines of waiting until v2.3 for Tomcat 7 compatibility (?) . . . .

So, my questions:

Is anyone successfully running (a recent version of) Grouper under Tomcat 7
or Tomcat 8?
Anyone have any thoughts or opinions/experience on which might be "better"?
What are the known issues with running Grouper under Tomcat 7 or Tomcat 8,
and are there workarounds?

I *might* be able to persuade my sys admin colleagues to go with Tomcat 6 if
we really have to, but they would prefer to use 7 or 8 for all the usual
reasons and have therefore asked me to find out if they can!

Many thanks in advance for any insights (or pointers to appropriate docs)
that anyone is able to provide.

Regards,

Mike
