Also when I tried adding the type using
GrouperDAOFactory.getFactory().getGroup().addType( group, base); I noticed
the in table row for the new entry did not have the Context id set, it was
null? I wonder if this could cause the Stale object exception.

I tried exactly what you did on a test group on our dev grouper instance and
got the same behaviour as you, see messages below.

Another thing I tried was adding an entry directly into the
grouper_groups_types table.

I produced a UUID using the Select UUID ( ) command, which gave me
66836442-7aa7-11e2-b95a-0050563b0032 (I stripped out the -) to leave me with
668364427aa711e2b95a0050563b0032.

I then added the group UUID, the type UUID and the context id of the group
into the new row.

This then allows me to delete the group from GSH and the UI, not sure if this
could potentially causes issues anywhere?
