Absolutely!!!    From my perspective, there are many of my colleagues in Higher education (and K-12 for that matter) that understand the NEED and future of how technology will influence both the teaching and performing spheres, but have little to no knowledge of how to start, implement and use these wonderful tools. I can imagine this sounds a bit naive to most of you who are brilliant (my opinion) in network systems and computer science, but it’s true and to be honest, it is these very people (the teachers/performers) that drive the efforts on campuses to invest in the technology. Our LOLA efforts in Memphis, for example, did not come from our Network/IT department and was a struggle not being an IT specialist of audio engineer. What Justin is outlining makes alot of sense and it perhaps needs the perspective of a novice like myself or Tom to fully grasp the issue. I do think something like this would be a great way to expand the audience and participation now and in future workshops.

Hi All,

I enjoyed this morning’s conversation. Further to David’s point about hands-on education for artists – it makes me again think about the potential purpose of a separate track for people more interested in the ‘doing’ then discovering the outcomes of networking the arts. If that’s something to pursue, I might recommend a structured curriculum that begins with short explorations of production elements (video, audio and lighting) and their relationship to our networking tools and then moves into demos of full setups of solutions like Domenico suggested. In my opinion, having some general understanding of the impact of production elements before you get ‘in the box’ is essential (and purposeful knowledge generally for artists in their lives). Those aspects have the potential to improve or completely ruin and technology’s use. It makes diagnosing issues easier as well.

Best,
Justin
