Yes, I was referring to hardphones only. For those on the decision
making path, here's a partial set of questions to ask.

# How does the set get its configuration on power up?
# If the configuration source is external, what happens when
the source is unreachable via the network?
# Can the set be configured locally by the user?
# Can the set be configured remotely by central staff?
# What does the UI look like? Is it web-based? Graphic? CLI?
# Can the set be branded?
# Does the set have a graphic display?
# Does the set have an MWI? If so, what voicemail systems has it
been tested with?
# Can the ringer be customized? Do an assortment come with the
phone? Can locally produced ringers be added to the option list?
# Is there an internal speed dial list kept on the set?
# Is there click-to-dial with a PC-based address book?
# Does the set have caller-id? If so, what is displayed when
caller-id information is not available?
# Is the set multi-line capable?
# Is there a volume control?
# Is there a headset jack?
# How is the set powered?
# Is there a "hold" or "mute" button?
# Is there a "conference" button?
# Is there a "transfer" button?
# Is there a "blind transfer" button?
# Is there a missed call directory
# Is there a serial port on the set for debugging?
# Can the display angle be changed?
# Can the display brightness/contrast be changed?
# Is the display in color?
# Can the local configuration be locked so the user can't make
changes?
# Can a password be required at power up?
# Can the set be locked at power up against outgoing calls until
a password is entered? If so, can it be locked automatically
from an idle timer? From a date/time clock?
# Does the set have in internal dial plan? How is it configured?
# Can URLs be entered? Easily?
# If the set is powered locally, is there a battery backup option?
# Is the power 110v AC?
# If the set can be powered from the uplink closet what switches
will it work with?
# Is there one button voicemail access? How is the voicemail
address configured?
# Can the set be remotely accessed via telnet? Ssh? Does such
access give central staff complete configuration control? Can
they reboot the set remotely?
# Is the set OS upgradeable over the network? If not, how is the
OS upgraded?
# Is there DOS attack recognition code in the OS. If so, what
does it do when an attack is perceived? Are other types of
attacks recognized?
# Can the set use DHCP to get an ip address and find a
configuration server, if necessary?
# Can VAD be turned on/off? If VAD is turned on, does the set
produce comfort noise? If so, is the noise canned or is the
actual current background noise sampled?
# Is the set interoperable with all SIP-compliant proxies?
Which has it been tested with?
# What is the warranty?
# What is the cost for one set? What is the cost per set for
100 sets? For 1000 sets?
# What is the delivery lead time?
# Even if the user can't changed the configuration locally, can
it be checked?
# Is there a speaker in the set?
# What codecs does the set support? Are any of them wideband?
# Does the set support media streams other than udp?
# Does the display, if any, support IM? If so, is it SMS? If
not, what is it?
# Is the preferred codec configurable?
# Can the set be configured to use a secondary proxy in case the
primary is unreachable?
# Is theea place in the display tree where errors can be viewed?
# Are dtmf tones generated after call completion? (for use in
walking IVR trees)
# Is there a redial feature? Is it one button?
# Does the set have a call waiting feature?
# Does the set have a do not disturb feature?
# Well the set auto-complete unmbers dialed and/or URIs addressed?
# Will the set do caller id blocking?
# Will the set do anonymous call blocking?
# Does the set produce sidetone?
# Does the set display date/time?
