I got a lot of feedback from folks - thanks.
It looks like there's been a huge effort from manufacturers over the
past year or so to roll out more basic and cost effective SIP phones.
That is huge in my book, since we really want to get out of the "Henry
Ford pbx phone set" at Georgetown (meaning any phone set you want as
long as it's our black Avaya PBX phone). Avaya say's that it's next
release for the s8700 platform will support SIP - we'll see. This also
provides us an enormous range of options to use off the Broadsoft switch
as well. That's great.
The IPDialog set looks interesting http://www.ipdialog.com and priced
right ($200 or less). The only thing I couldn't tell was whether you
could get multiple calls/multiple call appearances on it. I see a
"flash" key - which certainly will look familiar to analog centrex line
users - but it's always been a pain when conf calling etc....
Ben T (oh great fearless VoIP leader) - One thing we may want to think
about building (I2 VOIP working group) is a matrix of IP and SIP phones
and which platforms they work well on. This would be especially useful
for softphones, especially since even the "free" Windows Messenger
Client can be a real pain to configure. Dennis B and Steve B both
indicated that they have trialed lots of phones over the past year so I
think there's already a wealth of knowledge out in our group that could
be very useful to all of us. An example of this for me yesterday was
the IPDialog link. That's something that looks very promising and I see
that set as a real potential terminal for lots of legacy Centrex sites
as they cut over to new platforms that support SIP.
Thanks again folks. CBP
