In a system with multiple levels of assurance, it might be nice to know at what level the user was authenticated (and, of course, what it means to be authenticated at, say, Level 2).

And we have to wonder if the user cares. :)

Yes, I was actually wondering the same thing myself :-)

It's not only the user who should care. The organization might care that it can meaningfully audit the communications later, for example. Less likely in academia, but still perhaps a real concern.
