*Discussion*

The group discussed the draft PIC.edu project objectives that Tim sent out
on November 1. There was general agreement that Openfire
(http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/) is likely to be the best
choice for server software. For clients, there was general agreement that we
don't want to pick one to focus on; instead, we should detail what features
clients will need to support and let users and admins pick their own. Jorj
noted that few clients are adequate for chatroom management, though only
admins will need that. Audio, SSL, and availability on Windows Mobile are
other features that many clients lack.

The group agreed that we should definitely have elements of PIC.edu ready to
demo at the Internet2 Member Meeting in April, and that it would be good to
demo something at Joint Techs in January. Jorj suggested broadcasting
conference audio through Openfire, to demonstrate that XMPP isn't just for
IM (and thereby demonstrate its usefulness for the "IC" in PIC). Tim
suggested setting up chatrooms for meeting attendees to use, as a way of
recruiting project participants. [ACTION] Tim will ask SIP.edu participants
for their insights on how to proceed with PIC.edu, and in particular how to
handle user generation and management. [ACTION] Tim will put the draft
PIC.edu project objectives on the wiki and invite people to start
contributing there.

The group agreed to keep "PIC.edu" as the name for the project.

Tim noted that Jabber can interoperate with Microsoft LCS via a gateway; this
may be of interest for later stages of the PIC.edu project. [See
