*Discussion*
Mike Jones opened the call with a short introduction to his company,
RADVISION.
RADVISION makes videoconferencing equipment, in particular an H.323 gatekeeper
and MCU bridge that supports both SIP and H.323 -- the only such device they
know of. Mike is joining the PIC calls "to see what the next big thing might
be"
and to figure out how to participate in the Spring Member Meeting.
A Catalonian networking organization called I2CAT (www.i2cat.net) has
expressed
interest in working with PIC; they claim to be doing a lot of things similar
to
what we're doing. Jeremy is trying to get in touch with them.
Joe agreed to take on the project manager role for the Spring MM PIC trial,
subject to the approval of his manager at Ford. [AI] Ben T. will get Joe
access
to the web server and CVS.
Jamey is working on the client requirements document, and emailed an outline
to
wg-pic during the call. Ben T. has been in touch with Microsoft about getting
features added to Microsoft clients (MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger, Windows
mobile clients). Microsoft has identified three people to work on this, two
from
the newly-merged Messengers group and one from Microsoft Research. There's
also
an SDK, which should make it easier to customize a version for the Spring MM
trial. [AI] Deke will talk to Apple when we have a client requirements
document
we can point them to. Steve noted that he's received a new client version from
his contact at Wave3, who's still involved. The group agreed that we need to
have a draft of the client requirements doc ready within 2 weeks to give Apple
and Wave3 clarity about what we want. [AI] Bob will help Jamey with the client
requirements doc.
The permanent PALS server is now up. Anyone who wants an account to be able to
modify, inspect, or debug it, should contact Ben T.
Spring MM PIC trial planning:
- Ben T. talked to Chuck Wolf at Georgetown; Chuck will be building the
network
and will join next week's conference call. Georgetown is working on getting
Cisco switches donated. There will be 16-17 access points spread across 3
floors. Chuck is fine with staging the network at Georgetown the week before
the
MM. The teardown people will have a list of our gear so they can pull it when
they close a room. It was agreed that we can train people to do the
recalibrations that will be required when the gear is moved. There's
uncertainty
whether or not there will be a router between the various VLANs. The
Georgetowners want to use the technology themselves as well as help
demonstrate
it; [AI] Ben T. will work on getting loaner equipment for the Georgetown crew;
in particular, he will talk to Internet2's HP contact about ipacs.
- There was general agreement that, as in Hawaii, it would be helpful to have
a
"war room" (quiet, primarily for troubleshooting and coding) separate from the
main PIC trial room (which is more for representing the event to MM
attendees).
[AI] Ben T. will look into getting a war room at the Spring MM.
- It was agreed that there will be audio room bugging as in Hawaii. Access
Grid
nodes are the easiest places to use for this; we might be able to tap into
Polycom viewstations as well. [AI] Joe will ask Mike Jones of RADVISION about
doing video room bugging as well, and by next week's meeting will also follow
up
on a lead he has on this with a different company.
- There was general agreement to aim to have the client software checkpointed
and ready for registrants to install two weeks ahead of the meeting.
- We have $5000 from Microsoft to spend on the trial; all they ask in return
is
acknowledgment as a sponsor. The group discussed various options, including
giving away a small number of really nice headsets as prizes, giving everybody
an ordinary headset, and doing some combination of these. Some USB headsets
cost
as little as $35, and we already have a bunch of ordinary headsets left over
from Hawaii. [AI] Joe will see if we can use Ford's permission card to get
more
headsets. See the list for further discussion of how to spend the $5000.
