Here is an excerpt from notes I made during the conference regarding my experience of the FMM demo:

Tuesday: Took a while after starting PC, even from having it on and opening the top, for it to find the network and connect -- about 30 secs -- in Ballroom 1. Then wireless connection came and went. At first it would say signal strength high, then say it is low. By the opening plenary the signal strength in ballroom 5&6 was excellent and the network was found immediately on login to the laptop. Then the signal strength was low. Speed dropped from 11 mbps to 2 then up to 6.

Signal strength in break room is excellent (Indiana Ballroom). Got an immediate connection. Tried to call HelpDesk. When click on name in the rich presence portal it is a link of the form sip:. If no sip client is open, it tries SIPC and gets errors. Was able to connect with helpdesk by initiating call directly from SIPC. I could hear the person at the desk, but she said she could hear only static and hung up. With session open, clicking on a sip link brought up Session call dialog with the address filled in. Attempt to connect got dialing message, but no answer. Found that I was connected with no signal. Then it said wireless connection unavailable.

Close top, open top, signal strength excellent. The help desk said every time I talk they get static and it sounds horrible. Reduced volume on microphone to 1/2. When tried to call a room I got "unh is unavailable, please leave a message and someone will return your call as soon as possible." Then call was terminated.

Helpdesk was using a real IP phone. She turned it on and I tried again while sitting next to helpdesk. This time I could not hear her on it, even though I was nearby. She said there were two WLANs deployed by the hotel, plus rogue access points set to infrastructure, plus saw WLAN from AT&T building. Then they decided the WLAN system they were using that sent out streams of signals instead of clouds was not working and went to classic one and it is not working so well either.

Tuesday evening after 9 pm had a better experience. The WLAN strength was very good and speed was 6 Mbps. DMM called me using SIPC, which he had succeeded in downloading. Both of us were using WLAN and we were in the same part of the hall on the second floor. I was using Session. His audio was clear, but he said mine was breaking up. I switched to SIPC. Then his audio sounded deeper and he could hear me OK. We succeeded in adding whiteboard to the session and shared browser. We used IM with no problem. Using shared desktop was tricky due to issue of SIPC requiring a password and getting some error messages on my end. I was using a later version of the SIPC client than he was. I experienced breakup of the voice when simultaneously using other media.

Wed the signal strength was good and did not drop. Tonight I talked with someone on the network team who said the device sending streams had been briefly taken out of service then put back again. Still used only one stream, but it is a powerful one.
