Right.

In our software testing, I always turn off the SAP server if I am not around, like now. I let my network admins know I am testing the software. The announce matches the distribution.
Currently, our TTL is 99, and announce is every 30 seconds, and we would like anyone multicast in the world to get this.
But what are the recommended settings, for various situations?

It sounds like we need a "best practices" document, and put it where people that need it can find it.

The 30 page RFCs are nice for the tech folks, but there are in- between admins like me that should know (and only need to know) what parameters to use, or not use, in the simpler config files and GUI interfaces. Unfortunately, we often end up doing more than we are really qualified to do, as many folks in IT are spread out real thin. So we need better training and simple documentation. Where can we go for that?

Not making any excuses, just stating the situation some of us are in.

Hi,

We would like to keep using them, if possible, for our streams. Of course,
if SAPs are blocked by networks, they won't be much good! But there has to
be a way of dealing with the storms...and hopefully the SAPs that don't
have streams.

the SAPs should have a suitable/relevant TTL and should have a scoped
address that matches the distribution of the streams that the SAP
announces. that said, theres far too many broken SAP servers out there.
