Since this has become a recurring problem I'm going to approach it through education; telling people not to leave a SAP listener running on their desktop, and getting them to disable sap listen on their routers. Hopefully that will be enough. But I wonder whether it is time to start down the road towards deprecation. . .

Good points Bill. I can't speak for anyone else, but using SAPs is one more way for a small school like ours to make our streams known and available to the rest of the multicast-enabled world. Until something better comes along, the self-discovery feature is very valuable.

I admit SAPs have been abused, especially recently...many of the SAPs are inactive, and the SAP storms have been very disruptive to some institutions. But I don't see any other available choices at this time. Maybe the resurgence of storms is a reflection of an increase in interest in being able to advertise one's programs in an intuitive manner. Click on the SAP, and watch the show.

We would like to keep using them, if possible, for our streams. Of course, if SAPs are blocked by networks, they won't be much good! But there has to be a way of dealing with the storms...and hopefully the SAPs that don't have streams.
