Joel,

Because of licensing concerns, Windows Media, Quicktime and Real do not include a codec for MPEG2 with their free distribution. Quicktime has an optional MPEG2 codec, but it is simple profile, not MPEG2 Transport Stream. VBrick has VPlayer, which adds an MPEG2 codec to Windows Media, but only works on Windows-based systems (not Apple or *NIX).

Michael Wellings tells me that he can only encode WM in software up to 720p in real time. I'll look at the docs of the Tandberg codec I am renting, and see if it can do VC-1 or MPEG4.

Is there a computer that can encode WM in 1080i in real time?

Any chance of adding a Window Media HD stream to this? It would be around 5 Mbps and is much more accessible to the average user than the Videolan player...

An mpeg-2 rtp stream ought to actually be playable in a number of applications other than VLC. It's wouldn't shock me at all if quicktime or a suitable version of realplayer was able to play this back with an appropriately constructed sdp file. VLC is probably available for more platforms than any other media player I can think of, though it strikes me as unlikely that this video stream would be terribly useful on my pda or phone, I expect that's also not the point.

In terms of bit rate, I'd expec that most people that can receive a 5Mb/s multicast stream to be able to recive a 20Mb/s multicast stream without trouble, but maybe I'm just being wildly optimistic again

In addition to the usual standard definition multicast, the general sessions of the I2/ESNet Joint Techs Meeting <http://jointtechs.es.net/wisconsin2006/> will also be netcast in HD MPEG2. It will be viewable in the Videolan player <http://www.videolan.org/>. The url will be <udp://233.0.59.1:1234>.

Caution: This will be a significant multicast stream (20 Mbps) and will require a fast computer with a 100 Mbps (or faster) Ethernet connection.

This is subject to equipment availability and having all the right ducks in the proper rows (equipment still en route).

Dave
