Multicast working group BoF 7/18/05
- Thanks to Kevin for chairing the group since its inception.
- Campus IP TV distribution war stories
- Northwestern (Tim Ward)
- BPDUs from user machines cause spanning tree
to flush all multicast CAM table entries resulting in CGMP
snooping switches to flood multicast
- Encoding MPEG4 at 2 Mbps
- 20 or 24 channels using Videofurnace encoders and software
players.
- 4350 rooms. 2750 max viewership election night (1 CNN, 2 CNBC,
3 Comedy Central). Switches are polled for CGMP stats.
- Students vote on channel lineup.
- No set top boxes by choice.
- Client controlled closed captioning now supported.
- Schools of Communications/Journalism have a joint virtual
channel.
- videofurnace supports DRM for premium content.
- licensing/franchise fees
NBC offering direct deals for their lineup
- Dartmouth doing 62 channels and wireless.
- Cornell rolling out service this fall.

- AHECTA - American Higher Ed Cable TV Association.
- Time Warner trial in San Diego using Realvideo w/multicast and DRM
- High bandwidth multicast/bigvideo
- 25 Mbps SD DV
- 25 Mbps MPV (MPEG compressed HDTV) about 6 second encoding delay
- 270 Mbps compressed HD
- 1.2 Gbps uncompress HD
- CPU problems we had with 30 MBPS DVTS transmission on the first hop router
- IPv6 multicast
- Abilene rolling out new JunOS release soon that supports embedded
RP
