Just one historical remark:

If someone does still have some of the old Parallax/XVideo boards for Suns,
those were (for their time) also pretty good for high-bitrates MJPEG. We had
them running at rates up to 15Mbps (limit of the old C-cube chip in them),
which at appropriate Q-factors could give 25 fps at full PAL resolution
(well, NTSC worked of course too ;-). That was 1995...1998 when we did
teleteaching with them.

So if someone still has some, you may want to check them out. We had a
non-RTP program we started out with, called MMSvideo and we also put
the speedups into vic (which then uses RTP of course). I am not sure
if that vic code actually made it back into the vic distributions from mash
or ucl. The trick to get high data-rates with vic by the way is to
a large extent in disabling the stamp-sized preview-window, because
software rendering of that took away most of the performance.

I don't have access to that hardware anymore, but the software should
be still on:

ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/pub/vic.FAU

Oh, yes. that Parallax MJPEG was 4:2:2 only. I don't know what those new Linux
boards that Larry has do have - from my experience, a couple of other boards
had only 4:1:1 causing nice incompatibilities too.

Actually i was hoping that i wouldn't need to hear the word MJPEG in the
new century anymore, but i guess MPEG2 encoders are still too expensive ?

Cheers
Toerless
