SIP.edu Conference Call December 16, 2004

*Attendees*

Dennis Baron, MIT
Jeremy George, Yale
Doug Foster, Cisco
Gabriel Somlo, Colorado State
Alex Hsia, NOAA, Boulder
Jeff Kuure, Internet2
Garrett Yoshimi, University of Hawaii

*Discussion*

Today's call begins with Dennis explaining MIT's current testing of beta
Cisco software which will allow configuration of the "from" addresses for
SIP calls. This will allow people to return calls through the gateway,
as normally the gateway doesn't allow you to connect directly but requires
you connect through a proxy.

Following this, Gabriel begins his overview of the Colorado State SIP
implementation. The hardware consists of one relatively modest rack
mount Dell system running Fedora Core Linux, which seems to handle the
load without difficulty. Both the proxy (iptel.org's SER) and gateway
(Asterisk) are running on the same hardware, which necessitates running
the gateway on a different port number. Currently, the gateway is
open to the world but work is being done on allowing connections
from the proxy only. Other issues with the implementation involved
customization of Linux kernel modules, configuration changes to load
the necessary drivers for the Digium PBX card, LDAP integration, and
PBX configuration to allow caller ID to function. The next stage is
to set up registration which will allow users to register any user
agent or soft phone to allow connections as long as they have an IP
address. Full implementation details are available at the SIP.edu site -
http://mit.edu/sip/sip.edu/deployments.shtml

Finally, participants were queried regarding interest in an SIP related
workshop, possibly to coincide with the spring VON meeting in San Jose. A
successful workshop was held in spring of 2004, and SIP.edu has generated
more interest since then. Possible dates would be Monday, March 7 for a
one-day workshop with Sunday, March 6 as an additional date if there is
enough interest in a two-day workshop. Possible topics for discussion
include framing and promotion of SIP to campuses, for example listing
benefits for international students in terms of staying in touch with
family abroad. Following last year's workshop, participants felt that one
day was too short and a two-day conference may be more beneficial. General
consensus was that co-scheduling with the VON conference would make
attendance easier.

The next call will be on January 6th or January 13th, with the exact
date to follow via email.
