Changing the functionality offered by a significant library in the OS isn't
the best way to maintain an OS either (not that that's your fault, but it
isn't mine either).
If you want to spend your time on this, the best way is to produce a
maintainable patch that would allow the curl package to be built with a
different library name (libcurl-openssl.so or something like that). I would
have to produce configure patches to support that, but it would be doable.
I looked into it, but it was extremely invasive to the curl build and it was
much easier to do what I did.
