I agree. Maven WAR overlays as implemented by the Jasig CAS project are very nice for the problems they solve, at the cost of some (perhaps necessary) complexity.

Not looking to foist Maven upon the Shibboleth IdP, especially if it is unwelcome, but it is worth appreciating what problems CAS is successfully solving with the technology.

If we're going to consider a Maven-based approach, one idea I'd suggest
is that we should look at supporting Maven WAR overlays, at least for
the war build portion. The CAS project uses that for their stuff, and
when I looked at it a while ago, it seemed pretty nice for certain
things, like allowing people maintain a customized web.xml. It also
might be a good way to support IdP plugins without requiring people to
maintain the extensions in the IdP dist directory itself.

I honestly don't know, yet. There's a whole lot I don't like about ant
but I've also not found anything better either.

Will the IdPv3 installer still be a shell script which calls ant ?

I am interested as I am looking at reconfiguring grouper/ldappcng.

Thanks!
