Remember that there's a timeout now, of about a minute or so.

My guess is the shar is not getting a response, and the timeout I put in
using libcurl is killing the shar. This doesn't shock me,
as my experience with timeouts is not positive, historically.

Anyway, as a test, you might change the AATimeout or AAConnectTimeout to zero.

And of course, check your origin's AA settings, the http/https thing, stuff
like that.
